How To Invest In Startups If You Have Like Zero Spare Money
Investing in startups was my dream since I discovered that it exists.
At the height of it, it’s a win-win-win:
The world gets another useful product, the founders get rich for their creation, I get richer for supporting them.
But how do I get to that first round, if I can spare just $3.49 for the Loch Ness monster before officially going broke?
I tried founding my own startups, hoping that their exit money will fuel my investment dreams.
Three spectacular failures later, all I had is a heap of experience and a book about it.
The reality of startups, despite our best hopes for tech levelling the playing field, is more of the same patriarchy.
One of the biggest obstacles to start a startup is the cost — creating a bespoke digital product and successfully marketing it requires a heap of very different skills.
Hiring qualified professionals to do the work is expensive.
Raising capital to fund that is a skill of itself.
Men prefer to invest in men, even in FemTech.
Also, investing is risky.
If you can’t afford to lose that money, if you don’t know how to decide which venture is worth the investment and will make you more money — you don’t invest.
Okay, so now what?
How does the above list of problems become a solution?
Using two magic tricks:
Delaying the major part of the cost to when the startup is profitable.
Planning the work to guarantee profits within a year.
Sounds to good to be true?
Let’s go step by step.
Time and money are wasted when people learn on the fly — I know that from painful personal experience.
If every part of a project is handled by the relevant expert, the success of the project is 99% guaranteed.
That’s magic trick #2.
It’s made possible using magic trick #1 — under specific conditions:
Finding experts who believe in your project and agree to a symbolic fee now and the big profits later.
This is what I’m doing now:
I invest the development costs
(by doing the work myself) and charge a symbolic mentorship fee.
As the lead investor, I bring other experts to invest their skills under similar conditions.
We have the path to profits clear and focused before anyone does all the work.
What’s in it for You
If you have ideas and want to know if I can help make them profitable,
or if you have skills that you want to invest — let’s talk.
with love and purpose,
Ela
